Great Lakes Centennial Jamboree

The year 2010 marks the 100th Anniversary of the Boy Scouts of America, and, of course, the corresponding National Jamboree.  The leadership of nine Wisconsin and Upper Peninsula Councils met late last year to discuss how we could be a part of this grand event and to support the class of youth that miss out on the 2010 Jamboree (as a youth) due to shifting it to Scouting’s anniversary.  All nine councils agreed to hold a regional event worthy of this “once in a lifetime” anniversary.  Hence, the Great Lakes Centennial Jamboree was born!  Scheduled for September of 2009, the event has two main goals:

  • Celebrate 100 years of Scouting in America
  • Provide our youth with an opportunity on par with the 2010 National Jamboree

FAQ - from Lois, our Registrar

Our unit is being required to sign a Hold Harmless Agreement and a contract what should we do?

Under no circumstances should a Scout leader sign a Hold Harmless Agreement (or any type of an agreement/contract) on behalf of the troop, pack or post. Unit leaders have no authority to bind either the local Scout council or Boy Scouts of America in any contractual arrangement.  Only the Scout executive or his designee can sign a “hold harmless agreement.”  Please send all the paperwork and local tour permit to the Wausau Homes Scout Center.

Our unit is going on a campout across state do we need a tour permit?

Yes, if you plan a trip within 500 miles of your home, it is important that you obtain a local tour permit. A national tour permit is required for trips over 500 miles. Any trip under 50 miles and not an overnight should be called into Lois at the Wausau Homes Scout Center. Any overnight trip requires a tour permit. Both of these forms are available at the Scout Center and on our website under Forms and Downloads. Local tour permits should be received at the Wausau Homes Scout Center two weeks before your trip, and national tour permits need to be received one month before your trip.

Our unit is going on an airplane ride. Is there a form to fill out?

Yes, National, BSA requires a BSA Flying Permit, 2 weeks before your flight. See the link below to download the form.

We meet at our church. They are requesting proof of liability insurance? Can you help?

Yes, the Scout Center has a form available for you to complete that includes the information needed to process a certificate of insurance. The certificate is processed, mailed or faxed directly to the organization that requested it, and a copy is faxed to the National BSA Office. At least a week for processing is requested. Anything over one million dollars goes to National for approval and those certificates require two weeks processing time. National sends the certificate directly to the organization themselves and forwards a copy to the Wausau Homes Scout Center.

Does our Pack have to record everything the boys earn on an advancement sheet?

No, Packs are required by National to only have ranks recorded. All the other pins and achievements can be purchased without an advancement sheet. Some units still put everything earned on the advancement sheet to keep for their own records. All we require is the ranks.

I have been in Scouting for years do I have to fill out another adult application?

Yes, a new application is required at all times now whether you are a new volunteer or one that has been registered for years in scouting. Effective April 1, 2003, all BSA Councils are required to do criminal background checks. The criminal background check is done on both paid and multiple registrations (multiple for example, would be a merit badge counselor). The front of an adult application has information pertaining to the background check and the Council copy of an adult application has a place for required social security number. The copies of the application have the social security number blacked out. This is for security purposes. Only the Registrar and Scout Executive have access to background information.

I am registered with the Troop so am I automatically on the Merit Badge Counselor list - Correct?

No. Troop registration is completely separate from Merit Badge Counselors. To be placed on the counselor's list National requires a new Adult Application and the Merit Badge Counselor sheet listing the badges you want to teach. Both must be submitted to the Wausau Homes Scout Center together. Just a suggestion: Your Scoutmaster should make sure all the Troop counselors are registered each year. That can happen by sending Lois your most up-to-date list. If they are not currently registered on the list, she will notify you.

What are the registration fees?

Registration fees are $10 for a youth or adult and Boy’s Life subscription $12.

Does 100% Boy’s Life mean every boy in our unit has to subscribe to the magazine?

No, to be classified as a 100% Boy’s Life unit, each family must have at least one subscription.
