CUB SCOUT FALL ROUNDUP

September is Cub Scout recruitment month. The Rib Mountain District recruits approximately 300 new Cub Scouts each year. This is a very exciting time for the new Cub Scouts as they’re starting a new school year and are excited to join Cub Scouts.

To help with the recruitment, we ask that each Pack begin to plan by identifying a few evenings that would work for your unit for your roundup. At the fall program kickoff, each Pack can sign up for their roundup evening. There will be plenty of dates to choose from, so it shouldn’t be necessary for a Pack to double up on a date. Plus one roundup per evening will make is possible for a Samoset Staff member and/or a Rib Mountain District Leader to be present for the recruitment night to welcome new families, conduct a new parent orientation and to collect registration forms and fees.

To make your Cub Scout Roundup, please consider holding the roundups on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings. This gives us the opportunity to do a boy talk at the school the day before and to get the kids all excited about Scouting. Also, don’t schedule your roundup during your regular Pack meeting, select a different day. The business of a Pack meeting may be too overwhelming for the new parents looking to register their sons in Scouting.

Finally, the registration and orientation takes about 25 minutes. During that time is a 5 minute opportunity for each Pack to discuss their unit specific information such as who are the current leaders, when the dens and Pack meet, special activities the Pack takes part in and when the next meeting will be. By staying within the 5 minute time period parents can come in, get acquainted with the program, get signed up and then get home to prepare for the first meeting. This demonstrates to new families that the Pack is well organized and that they are running a quality program for their son.

More information and details will be discussed at the Fall Program Kickoff. We look forward to a great Fall Roundup!

FALL CAMPOREE

Leave only Footprints, Take only Memories is the name of the Rib Mountain District’s Fall Camporee. Scheduled for October 10-12, the Camporee will have a Leave No Trace theme. Scouts will be encouraged to practice Leave No Trace ethics and LNT games and activities are planned. More details and registration forms will be at the September Roundtable and on the Samoset Council website at: www.samoset.org/ribmountain.

JAMBOREE ON THE AIR

Join the excitement of tens of thousands of other Scouts from around the world by participating in the 51st annual Jamboree on the Air. On Saturday October 18, amateur radio operators will open their stations to the Scouting community to share scouting experiences and ideas over the airwaves. The Wisconsin Valley Radio Association will host a JOTA station at Camp Phillips on Saturday October 18 starting at 10:00am. All Scouts and Scouters and encouraged to join us for the fun of Jamboree on the Air.

TRAINING INFORMATION AND DATES

Got new volunteer leaders? Get them trained On-line
So, your recruiting went well and you got some new parents to volunteer for scouting leader positions. Have them start their training on-line. New leaders can complete many of their initial Scout leader training sessions by going to www.samoset.org and clicking on the on-line tools heading. On this page, leaders can access New Leader Essentials and the Tiger, Wolf, Bear and Webelos Den Leader Basic Training. Click on the heading for the training you desire and complete the course at home. Remember to fill out the information required at the end of the session and your successful completion of the course will be recorded and reported to the Samoset Council.

Also, on the same page as New Leader Essentials, click on the on-line training header and find Youth Protection Training, various levels of Fast Start Training, and the Troop Committee Challenge for new committee members. These courses are offered by the BSA national office; so you will need to create an account ID and password and your BSA membership number from your membership card in order to record completion of the courses.

As a district, we will be offering only the Scoutmaster Supplemental Training and specialized training for Cubmasters and Pack Committee Chairs in the familiar classroom settings once this year. If we have more new leaders who register in the spring, we will consider running these two courses again. Outdoor sessions will be offered by the council later in the school year and may be required to complete your leader training. Once you become fully trained you are eligible to wear the Trained patch on your uniform.

Our goal this year is to have our volunteers trained in their specific position using the on-line courses whenever possible. If you or your new leaders have questions about what's available, contact John Paprocki, District Training Chair, at 715-675-4245 or jtpaprocki@yahoo.com.

ROUNDTABLE

Roundtable is your opportunity to meet with other Scouting leaders in the Rib Mountain District to hear about upcoming programs and to share information and ideas with individuals in your same position. Den Leaders, Cubmasters, Scoutmasters, Committee Chairs and any assistants are encouraged to attend. The roundtable commissioners have put together an excellent roundtable program with ideas that will benefit your pack or troop. The roundtables are held the first Thursday of the month at 7:00pm at the LDS Church, 5405 Rib Mountain Dr in Wausau. From Hwy 51, take the County Highway N exit. Going west on N, turn left onto Jonquil and the church is two blocks to the south.

New Leader Training

With the Annual recharter process over with, there are quite a few leadership changes in the Packs and Troops. If you changed a leadership position in your unit, then your training needs may have changed also. Proper training is an important component to providing a Quality program to the boys, so it’s in your best interest to get the training you need. Fortunately, getting that training couldn’t be easier.

All training, with the exception of Cubmaster and Scoutmaster Specific, is available online and can be preformed at your pace. Go to www.samoset.org/onlinetools to access the online training sites. Other live training sessions that are offered periodically will be announced at roundtable sessions. Please contact John Paprocki District Training Chair, 675-4245, or Michael Martens District Executive, 355-1450 with any training questions.

Friends of Scouting

Thank you to all the families and businesses in the district that contributed to the annual Friends of Scouting campaign. Your financial support is critical to providing a positive Scouting experience to every youth in the Council. With the influences of today’s society, Scouting’s positive impact of instilling character and values is even more important to our boys. Thank you again for your help.
