In early February, the Boy Scouts of America introduced newly updated youth protection training that is required for all volunteers before October 1, 2018. Even if you took the previous training prior to the February roll-out, you will need to take it again.

The updated mandatory training, includes three modules and a test that take a little over an hour to complete. The Mandatory and Recommended training modules draw on research from experts and survivors in the field of child abuse and maltreatment to identify the contributing factors and threats across the spectrum of child abuse, including: bullying, neglect, exposure to violence, physical and emotional abuse, and child sexual abuse. Once completed, volunteers will not have to retake the training for two years.

As we approach the October 1, 2018 deadline, Samoset Council volunteers need to be aware of the following timeline.

  • By September 15, 2018, all registered volunteers who have not yet completed the new youth protection training will receive an email and a letter from Scout Executive, Jeff Ottosen reminding them to complete the new youth protection training course before October 1.
  • On October 1, 2018, all registered volunteers who have not yet completed the new youth protection training will receive an email and letter, from the Scout executive, informing them that they may not participate in Scouting as a volunteer until they have completed the new youth protection training.  Volunteers who have not completed the new youth protection training will not help satisfy the BSA’s two-deep leadership requirement for Scouting functions.
  • On October 15, 2018 any volunteer who has not yet completed the new youth protection training will have their BSA registration expired.  To re-register with their unit as a volunteer they will need to submit a new adult leader application along with a certificate of completion for the new youth protection training.

The BSA’s new youth protection training serves as just one part of the BSA’s ongoing effort to enroll the entire community in the fight against child abuse both in and out of Scouting.
