Thank you! MUSHKODANY BOY SCOUT RECOGNIZEDBrenton M. Wiernik, son of Cliff and Ann Wiernik of Stevens Point, has been selected by the National Eagle Scout Association (NESA), as one of the 2008 $1,000 Hall/McElwain Merit Scholarship recipients, representing the Central Region of the Boy Scouts of America. NESA awards approximately 90 scholarships through its various programs annually. Brenton is a member of Boy Scout Troop 290, Stevens Point. He received his Eagle Scout Award in 2004 and has achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with triple silver palms. Brenton was one of the scouts representing Samoset Council at the 2005 National Boy Scout Jamboree and the 2006 National Order of the Arrow Conference. He has served two years on the Akela's World Staff. In 2008, he served as director of Crockett's Glen and received the 2008 Akela's World "On Wings of Excellence" award. He is active in the Tom Kita Chara Lodge of the Order of the Arrow, serving as Vice Chief-Administration and Activities chairman. Brenton is a 2008 valedictorian, graduating from Stevens Point Area Senior High School. He is currently attending the University of Minnesota - Twin Cities Campus, majoring in Psychology and Linguistics. CUB-A-RAMA & RECHARTER PAPERWORK DUEBe sure to save February 7th, 2009 as the day your Pack participates in the annual Cub-A-Rama event. The Cub Scouts who attend have a blast and learn a lot. There will be more info to come at our upcoming roundtables. Also on February 7th, 2009 you will be able to turn in your recharter paperwork. You will receive your packet in the beginning of January and be able to finish the online process right away. Our unit commissioners will be assisting you in this process. Thanks! BOY SCOUT FALL CAMPOREEThe Boy Scout Fall Camporee held at Camp Fletcher on September 26-28 was a huge success. Don Fabisiak and John Glodowski did a wonderful job planning the cooking themed camporee. 11 of the 15 Mushkodany troops participated with over 120 people in attendance. Be sure to mark your calendars for May 8-10, 2009 to participate in the Mushkodany Boy Scout spring camporee. NOMINATIONS FOR DISTRICT COMMITTEEThis is the time of year we select the leadership for the Mushkodany District Committee. By January 1st a District Committee must be selected and presented to the Council. Action on next year’s committee will be taken at the November 20th Annual Meeting/District Committee Meeting. Please submit your nominations via email to our District Chair, Emery Babcock (emery_babcock@yahoo.com) or our District Executive, Adam Freund (adam@samoset.org). 2008 CENTENNIAL QUALITY UNIT AWARD All units have until the end of the year to earn the 2008 Centennial Quality Unit Award. In 2007 over 80% of our units earned this award. This award is designed to recognize any unit that has shown improvement and dedication in providing a quality program. Here are the achievements: Trained leaders, retained youth, recruitment of new youth, get more families involved, youth advancement, outdoor activities, and program planning. CUB SCOUT RECRUITMENTThe Boy Scouts of America is the best program available for our youth today! This is why we emphasize recruiting new Cub Scouts into the program. These are our future Boy Scouts and Eagle Scouts. We hosted our most successful joint recruitment night on September 4th by recruiting 73 new Cub Scouts. Also through the efforts of countless volunteers Mushkodany has overall recruited over 150 Cub Scouts this fall! Its never too late to sign up for Scouts so invite your friends to the next meeting. MUSHKODANY TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES Mushkodany Boy Scout Training is going to be held Saturday January 31st, 2009 at Schierl Tire on Hwy 10 ROUNDTABLE The Roundtable Meeting is the best place for our units to receive District and Council information that is important to your unit. It is also the best place to fellowship and get ideas from other Scout Leaders. Our monthly Roundtable meetings are held the first Tuesday of the month. They start at 6:45 and are held at P.J. Jacobs Jr. High School in Stevens Point. If you would like more information please contact Adam Freund, 581-0281 or adam@samoset.org Cub Scout Training Events (following online Fast Start Training)New Leader Essentials: All new adult leaders in all Scouting programs should participate in this course as soon as possible after volunteering. The course presents an overview of the Scouting program, including the organization’s mission, aims, and methods. It is being held on Saturday October 18th at Schierl Tire on Hwy 10 from 8:00 a.m. to 10 a.m. Cub Scout Leader Specific: Cub Scout Leader Specific training focuses on the responsibilities, opportunities, and resources that will ensure a successful pack leadership experience. Participants receive specific instruction in their leadership position which will help them succeed in that position. It is being held on Saturday October 18th at Schierl Tire on Hwy 10 from 10:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. **If you are a not able to make these training dates you are encouraged to attend the training in another district. Contact Adam Freund for details. District Awards BanquetAt this years program kickoff we are going roll out the revised district awards nomination forms. Each unit can start selecting volunteers from their unit who are deserving of the various district awards. The banquet will be held in March, but we will be accepting nominations throughout the year. There are still a large number of volunteers who deserve recognition for their service to Scouting. Please nominate your fellow leaders! We will post the nomination forms and info for the upcoming banquet on the district website.
